VME bus (Versa Module Europa) is a flexible open-ended bus system which was introduced by Motorola, Phillips, Thompson, and Mostek in 1981. The VME bus was intended to be a flexible environment supporting a variety of computing intensive tasks, and became a very popular protocol in the computer industry. In many cases, the VMEbus system design has been tailored to support specialized applications in industrial controls, military, aerospace, transportation, Telecom, medical and many other embedded electronics applications. The large installed base and controlled open specifications made this technology popular in a variety of industries.
